First, let me start by saying I LOVE steak, so a good steak night always sparks my interest. Anywho, thanks to social media, I saw various posts promoting Around the Corner patio grill. It seemed like a cool spot to grab a beer after work and just relax on a beautiful day. The vibe was lowkey and the restaurant was located in East Downtown not far from my job. This will become a go to spot after one visit. Let me elaborate.
On Thursdays at Around the Corner, it’s Steak Night (yaaaaas!). Not just any steak night, but a large ribeye with two sides for $17. I was eager to see what they were workin’ with and ordered at the bar. The proper way to eat a steak is to drink an ice cold beer with it, and Around the Corner had some pretty good choices. I was being basic that day and settled for a Miller Lite, which was deliciously ice cold. I took my seat in a cozy booth positioned in front of a mounted flat screen (so I could watch the Cavs game of course). The service was decent and restaurant staff came to check on me as I anxiously waited for my order. Now to THIS STEAK. It was sooooooooo delicious.
Besides the fact that it was huge, the meat was cooked to perfection (which is Medium). The cut was full of flavor that lasted way after each bite and it practically melted in my mouth. The entrée came with two sides, a house salad and scalloped potatoes. Honestly, I don’t usually like these type of potatoes, but boy did I change my mind QUICK. The potatoes complimented the steak exceptionally, and just enough hint of cream and cheesy goodness. The house salad gave me just what I needed to feel semi-healthy after indulging in a high amount of protein and carbs. The salad was topped with a light vinaigrette that wasn’t overwhelming and feta cheese to give it the perfect kick of flavor.
I ordered an appetizer late, but had to try the pretzel and spinach artichoke dip that came with a small side of salsa. Being half Hispanic, I will say that the chips and salsa were pretty average. However, the dip had chunks of tasty artichoke and spinach wrapped in melting cheese. The pretzel was warm and toasted to my liking with a mustard dip on the side.
Around the Corner is a great open space that looks as if it was a home at one time. The bar has a great selection of wine and beer with comfortable and stylish tufted barstools. The staff is very personable and makes it a point to give great customer service. It was a nice, warm Houston day so many people were eating on the patios. It is a nice place to people watch amongst a diverse crowd of professionals, hipsters, and sports enthusiasts catching a game on television. To add to the cool vibe, they were playing HUMBLE by Kendrick Lamar while I was devouring my steak. This was followed by 50 cent and even some Sean Paul (remember him?).
I am eager to try out the other parts of Around the Corner’s menu. I would recommend this spot to anyone and everyone, especially on Thursdays. Check out their menu HERE and keep up with them on Instagram HERE.
For #steaknight, I am going to give them 5 out of 5 forks. Bon’ appetit.
